The Story

ETSU isn't close to the water, so how did a Buccaneer become the school's mascot? Legend has it that “Pirate Creek” is an underground river discovered near ETSU. Its tunnels, which once reached the Atlantic Ocean, attracted a notorious swashbuckler named Jean Paul LeBucque. The seafarer’s use of the tunnels as a safehaven were allegedly his demise – when geological shifts caused the tunnels to collapse, he didn’t survive.
