When the settlers in West Texas clamored for a university as early as the 1880’s, several years (and some local scandal) passed before Texas Technological College was created in 1923. They were briefly nicknamed the Dogies and the Matadors before becoming the Red Raiders in 1936. Their signature scarlet and black colors come from their days as the Matadors to symbolize a matador’s outfit and cape.
