Originally known as the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, NC State was founded on March 7, 1887. In 1918, it became the North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering, and a few years after that, the football team became known as the "Wolf Pack." Other NC State teams, known as the "Red Terrors," eventually adopted the Wolfpack nickname.
