On April 8, 1925, the Circuit Court for Dade County officially chartered a university that would serve the Miami metropolitan area and greater south Florida. Utilizing both land and financing from the founder and planner of Coral Gables, George E. Merrick, the University of Miami would open its doors to students a year later. Despite setbacks after the Great Miami Hurricane of 1926, the university rebounded into the beloved institution that we know today.
