In 1932, Maryland football coach Dr. H. Curley Byrd sought inspiration from Chesapeake Bay wildlife for the team mascot: the diamondback terrapin. The team once known as the Maryland Old Liners soon embraced their hard-shelled, reptilian mascot, including in this beloved cartoon rendition from 1971.
