The Story
VCU was founded, in its earliest form, as the medical division of Hampden-Sydney College in 1838. By 1854, the school became the Medical College of Virginia. In 1917, MCV merged with the Richmond Professional Institute to become VCU, and adopted the Richmond Professional Institute's nickname, the Rams.
