Fans and alums of Wichita State aren’t shocked by the history of their unorthodox nickname and mascot any time the topic comes up. Back in the school’s days as Fairmount College, students had a quintessentially Kansas side hustle to earn money: wheat harvesting, also known as shocking. Given the school’s football field (made of wheat stubs) and the Pep Club’s nickname, the “Wheaties,” it only made sense that football team manager RJ Kirk began calling the athletic teams the Wheatshockers.
